When Land Rover launched as an all-terrain utility vehicle, first known as the Series I back in 1947, its spirit of discovery united rugged capability with polished sophistication. The brand was born in post-war Britain, conceived by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the Rover Company, who imagined a versatile, go-anywhere vehicle based on the wartime Jeep. The classic Series I was launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, where it captured enthusiasts' attention with its boxy styling, its aluminum body (due to steel shortages), and unmatched off-road capability. It was built for farmers and adventurers alike and became the basis of a global legend.
1950s–60s: The Series II and Series III iterations evolved the original design, cementing Land Rover’s status as the workhorse of explorers, militaries, and rural communities.
1970: Enter the game changer: the Range Rover. The vehicle could have yacht-like interiors, permanent four-wheel drive, and a V8 engine, and it blurred the lines between luxury and off-road capability, effectively reshaping the SUV category.
1980s–1990s: Land Rover expanded its lineup with the Discovery (1989) as a family-friendly adventurer and the Freelander (1997), aimed at urban adventurers. Another successor was released on its 50th anniversary, the Defender (1990); a modernized version of the Series models, it became a cult classic.
2000s–Today: Land Rover modernized while maintaining tradition. The Range Rover Sport (2005) and Evoque (2011) combined dynamic performance with a stylish design, reaching urban dwellers and luxury shoppers. Lineup expansion was achieved with the Discovery Sport and Velar.
Technologies: Its focus on the future is reflected in technologies like Terrain Response® (adapting to terrain), lightweight aluminum architectures, and hybrid/electric drivetrains (e.g., Range Rover PHEV).
2030 and the Future: A full lineup of battery electric vehicles (including the EV63 EV and 64-kilowatt battery packs in existing PHEV models) will offer all the rugged confidence and no emissions.
